The Influencing Factors on Clinical Competence of Nursing Students
Eun Mi Jun
This study was conducted to identify and describe the relationships of the self-efficacy, self-directedness, and clinical competence with the target of nursing students residing in Busan.
As to data collection, it randomly selected four Universities, located in Busan from September, 4, 2013 to September, 30, 2013 and selected 268 junior and senior nursing students who had experienced clinical practices. The SPSS/PC+ ver 19.0 program was used for the analysis. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for stat istics.
The study results show that the grand mean was 3.46 in self-efficacy, 3.03 in self-directedness, and 3.36 in clinical competence. There was a positive correlation among self-efficacy, self-directedness and clinical competence. The most effective factor for clinical competence was self-directedness. The total explanation of clinical competence was 33.2%.
The study results reveal that self-efficacy had a significant positive correlation with self-directedness and clinical competence, while self-directedness had a significant positive correlation with clinical competence. This indicates that clinical competence would be enhanced as self-efficacy and self-directedness are higher. Therefore, the development of internal factors such as self-efficacy and self-directedness is required to improve nursing competency.
Key words: Nursing student, Self-efficacy, Self-directedness, Clinical competence
