Kyu Eun Lee
This study was done to identify the relationship of perceived health status, social support, depression and life satisfaction and to identify predictors of life satisfaction for elderly people for each gender.
The research design for this study was a descriptive survey design using a convenience sample. Data collection was done using self-report questionnaires with 232 elderly people from community health center. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchial multiple regression with the SPSS Win 18.0 Program.
There were significantly different perceived health status and social support between male elders and female elders. However depression and life satisfaction were not significantly different from one gender to another. In hierarchial multiple regression analysis perceived health status, and depression were significant predictors and explained 73.0% of life satisfaction for male elders. For female elders, coresidence with child, perceived health status and depression were significant predictors and explained 54.0% of life satisfaction.
Findings of this study provide a comprehensive understanding of life satisfaction and related factors for elderly people in Korea. However, further studies with a larger random sample and more detailed research design are necessary.
