Original Article : A Study on the Relationship of Elderly-related Experience to Knowledge of and Attitude to the Elderly in Dental Hygiene Students

ABSTRACT
Objectives:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the elderly-related experience of dental hygiene students to their knowledge of the elderly and attitude toward them.
Methods:
The subjects in this study were 346 dental hygiene students at health colleges in the city of J, South Gyeongsang Province. A survey was conducted in June and July, 2014, and the answer sheets from 316 respondents were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS 21.0.
Results:
As for the influence of elderly-related experience on attitude toward the elderly, educational experience related to the elderly had a statistically significant negative impact on that (p<0.05), and that was under the statistically significant positive influence of experience of living with one or more elderly person (s) (p<0.01), volunteering experience for senior citizens (p<0.05), and awareness of the necessity of education geared toward understanding the elderly (p<0.05). Concerning knowledge of the elderly, knowledge of their physical and physiological areas (p<0.01) and knowledge of their family and social areas (p<0.01) exerted a statistically significant influence on attitude to the elderly.
Conclusions:
The findings of the study are expected to provide useful information on the awareness of dental hygiene students about senior citizens. In the future, research efforts should be made to determine how to improve the awareness of dental hygiene students about elderly people and their attitude.
